Thames Water has paid out more in fines for causing pollution than any other UK company, according to an Environment Agency report.

The water sector is responsible for more than a quarter of all serious industrial pollution incidents, making it the most polluting sector of UK business.

Thames Water tops the league table of polluters, having paid out £128,000 in court fines for four water pollution offences.

It was not the only water firm to make the league table - Severn Trent and Southern Water both found themselves in the top 10 after paying out more than £50,000 in fines each.

The Environment Agency's annual Spotlight report examines trends in the number and type of prosecutions brought for pollution offences.

This year's figures showed that nine out of 10 water and sewerage companies were fined large amounts - mostly for water pollution - and that serious pollution incidents caused by the industry were up 16 per cent from 2004.

Thames Water said it was committed to "making pollution incidents a thing of the past".

The under-fire firm claimed that the figures in the Environment Agency report did not "tell the whole story" and said that it had reduced serious pollution incidents by 75 per cent over the past three years.
